The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued a Portland cement and quick lime health alert.
“Portland cement and quick lime can cause serious burns and respiratory irritation. Quick lime reacts strongly to water and produces heat, increasing the risk of injury. Cement dust can also irritate the skin, eyes and lungs.” the agency said.
Key hazards to watch for:
- Skin Contact: Can cause irritation, rashes burns, or allergic reactions.
- Eye Contact: May result in irritation or severe chemical burns.
- Inhalation: Can irritate the nose, throat, and airways.
Required PPE:
- Alkali-resistant gloves.
- Long sleeves and long pants.
- Safety glasses or goggles.
- Appropriate respiratory protection.
Engineering controls such as ventilation and dust‑control systems should be used whenever possible.
MSHA recommends the following safe practices:
- Work in well‑ventilated areas.
- Avoid entering or working in dusty zones.
- Handle materials carefully to prevent dust release.
Hygiene and cleanup:
- Wash hands and any exposed skin promptly after handling materials.
- Remove contaminated clothing right away.
If exposure occurs:
- Skin or eyes: Flush with plenty of water immediately.
- Clothing: Remove contaminated items.
- Medical help: Seek care if irritation or burns develop.
